Design of a PMA for focusing a 4-stage image intensifier
Abstract
A permanent magnet assembly (PMA) was developed for focusing an image intensifier type EMI 9912, to be used in a spaceborne image photon counting system. The design is very simple and can easily be optimized for other image intensifiers. The selected design is based on a configuration called the Poole design. The mass of the PMA is only 15 kg and has a very low stray magnetic field. Due to material problems in the magnetic material, a polymer based Samarium Cobalt material (Hera) used in the construction, the full performance specifications are not met, but solutions to these problems are proposed. The feasibility of developing a permanent magnet assembly for focusing an image intensifier in space is demonstrated.
