The equivalent sound level
Abstract
Formulae are given for the equivalent sound level, i.e., the level of a steady-state noise without impulses or tone components which is equivalent to the actual noise emitted over a period of time. It is suggested that the exchange rate parameter in the formulae be set at approximately three for the analysis of cases of physical interest. In addition, integrating sound level meters that employ a version of the equivalent sound level formulae are discussed. The determination of hearing damage risk, speech interference or annoyance on the basis of the equivalent sound level is also considered.
