Omnidirectional telemetry antennas
Abstract
The theoretical limit of an ideal telemetry antenna would be 0 dB gain with 100% coverage of 4pi steradians. This paper considers the conformal microstrip antenna as a unique solution to the problem of approaching this theoretical limit. This antenna: (1) provides excellent continuous telemetry coverage (99% coverage with a gain of greater than -8 dB), (2) has a low-profile design with minimum aerodynamic drag and minimum mechanical impact on the structure of the vehicle, (3) is manufactured as a simple, reliable, and easily produced single printed circuit board antenna, and (3) is easily wrapped around the missile and bolted or glued in place.
