Computer evaluation of continuous phase FSK using the Viterbi algorithm
Abstract
The performance of continuous phase FSK (CPFSK) using the Viterbi algorithm for detection is evaluated mainly by computer simulation. The probability of error for coherent detection is evaluated for search (observation interval) lengths of 2, 3, 5, and 10 (essentially infinite). A frequency deviation ratio of 5/7 is used for evaluation since this value very closely approximates the optimum value. Both hard and soft decisions are considered for detection with the Viterbi algorithm. The hard and soft decision simulation results are also compared to previously developed bounds for the coherent detection of CPFSK.
