Performance characterization of a high data rate MSK and QPSK channel
Abstract
The performance of a laboratory digital communication system operating at 600 and 800 Mbps with both QPSK and MSK modulation is reported. This demonstration link is typical of high data rate two-hop Ku-band communication links for tracking and data relay satellite system and satellite switched time division multiple access applications. The demonstration link was both tested in the laboratory and modeled via computer simulation in an effort to determine the relative merits of MSK versus QPSK in a typical system. It is shown that the energy-per-bit-to-noise ratio required to achieve a bit error rate of 10 to the minus fifth is between one and two dB less with MSK than with QPSK.
