Determination of the Free Boundary in Potential Theory, the Boundary Problem of Physical Geodesy
Abstract
The earth figure and gravitational field are determined from astrogeodetic and gravimetric data. Green's third function is applied to the geopotential and leads to a nonlinear functional equation for the earth surface. This equation is solved in Banach space on the basis of a nonexplicitfunction theorem. The procedure can be used in establishing conditions for the existence of a unique solution to the boundary value problem of physical geodesy.
