Measurements of periodic flow in rotating machinery
Abstract
A description is given of high-response instrumentation used to obtain accurate measurements of the periodic or time-dependent flow in rotating machinery. The instrumentation (pitot and multi-sensor hot film) are described with emphasis on improvements over previous systems. Data analysis procedures utilizing empirical calibrations and digitized data as inputs to a computer program are outlined. Accuracies of the techniques are established utilizing a documented flow system. Typical results for a large-scale compressor are presented, including blade-to-blade profiles of velocity components and total pressure in both stationary and relative (rotor frame) coordinate systems.
