Effect of finite and infinite aspect ratios on flow patterns in curved rectangular channels
Abstract
Flow visualization results are presented for fully developed laminar flow in curved rectangular channels. The study was carried out for channel-section aspect ratios 1-10 inclusive and 12, and for curvature ratios of 0.2 and 0.025. The primary object of the experiment was to study the interaction of Dean's hydrodynamic instability with boundary-value-type vortices. The critical Dean number for the onset of instability-type vortices is determined. The results agree well with available theoretical results for flow in curved rectangular channels.
