Design approach to a new range of fibre optic components
Abstract
It was found in an investigation that an immediate market need could be satisfied by developing a range of hardware (transmitters, receivers, and connectors) for use in the industrial short haul data transmission market. It was decided that the most rapid impact could be achieved by working, initially, with polymer fibers. The market which is foreseen is related to practical short haul data transmission up to 10 Mbits/sec, precise dependable modular components for complex systems development, and general educational and laboratory use. A rapid penetration of these three markets is achieved because the overall usage of fiber optic transmission techniques is increased in all three areas by the availability of a simple, well engineered and inexpensive kit of parts enabling systems engineers to concentrate on systems design.
