Polymer drag reduction - A literature review, 1975-6
Abstract
Polymer drag reduction, which permits fluid friction levels to be diminished by at least half through the introduction into solution of a few parts per million of macromolecules, is discussed. Topics considered in the literature review include: drag reduction in pipe flow, airfoils, streamline bodies, flat plates and other geometries; techniques for visualizing and quantifying flow; the structure and conformation of polymers in solution; theoretical and experimental studies of the turbulence structure and the mechanism of drag reduction by polymer additives; drag-reducing suspensions; and decreases in heat transfer due to reductions in fluid friction levels.
