The mechanics of liquid jets
Abstract
Conservation laws for a liquid are considered along with aspects of jet instability, jet geometry, drop size upon jet breakup, the driven jet, and the sol-gel process and other applications of liquid jets. Macroscopic conservation equations for a liquid are examined and stability analyses of cylindrical liquid jets are conducted, taking into account an inviscid and a viscous free cylindrical jet with axial disturbance, a viscous free cylindrical jet with axial disturbance and free surface charge, and the effect of gravity and the earth's spin on jet stability. In an appendix attention is given to Navier-Stokes equations and stress components in cylindrical coordinates, the momentum equation for a liquid jet, and the scaling of the shear stress in a liquid jet.
