Obtaining a quiescent steady plasma in a magnetic field by a diffusion method
Abstract
A steady, currentless quiescent plasma in a magnetic field was obtained by diffusing it across a metallic grounded grid from a high-frequency discharge. At a plasma concentration of 10 to the 8th to 10 to the 11th per cu cm and electron temperature of 38 eV over the whole range of experimental conditions (helium gas, pressure of 0.01-0.1 torr, H = 0-1500 Oe), the density fluctuation level, expressed as the ratio of fluctuation magnitude to mean fluctuation, was in the range 0.05-0.5%, despite the fact that the density fluctuations in the high-frequency discharge amounted to 10-20%.
