Amplification in a nonthreshold parametric X-ray /gamma/ laser
Abstract
A theory on coherent nonthreshold parametric X-ray or gamma-ray amplification is developed. It is shown that exponential X- or gamma-ray amplification with a large increment (of the order of 1 kayser) is possible in a medium with nonlinear susceptibility and inversion at an idler frequency in the visible region. Such amplification is of a nonthreshold nature; i.e., it does not depend on the absorption coefficient, line width, or any other dissipative parameter of the medium at the amplified-signal frequency. A theory is outlined for nonlinear parametric three-frequency interaction in a highly dispersed nonlinear medium in a spatially and temporally incoherent pump field. The possibility is demonstrated of achieving nonthreshold three-frequency parametric amplification in a resonant three-level optically inverted medium with electronic X-ray or nuclear Moessbauer transitions.
