The limits of the helical instability of an arc column
Abstract
The paper presents results on the screw-instability boundaries of an arc-discharge argon plasma column, walled-stabilized in a water-cooled quartz tube. The boundaries were studied as a function of tube channel diameter, applied longitudinal magnetic field and gas pressure (which varied in the range 100,000-1,100,000 Pa). Visual observation showed that the screw instability boundaries were associated with the appearance of emission pulsations or a jumpwise increase of arc voltage.
