Some investigations on missiles using a spike for aerodynamic control at high Mach numbers
Abstract
Missiles of a length of 7.5 calibers with stabilizing at the tail and different nose shapes were tested in a gun tunnel at Mach number 8.8. The main purpose was to investigate the possibility of aerodynamic control of such missiles by means of a deflected spike. By simple estimations the order of magnitude of the maximum normal force created by a deflected spike can be calculated for different nose shapes.
