Prediction of onset and development of boundary layer transition
Abstract
The existing prediction means of the onset of the boundary layer transition was analyzed as well as its development up to the established turbulent regime, in the field of incompressible or moderately compressible flows. A review of the practical prediction techniques is given together with a discussion of the available empirical criteria and of approximate methods for calculating the boundary layer, starting from a given beginning of transition. Special attention is paid to recent methods of prediction, using transport equations for describing the development of the turbulence in the boundary layer during transition. It is shown by different examples of application that this is a technique which makes it possible to give a reasonable prediction of the onset and development of transition, in good agreement with experiments.
