Theoretical and experimental study of the dynamics of a spinning satellite with a toroidal tank
Abstract
Nutational stability of a spin-stabilized satellite containing liquid in a toroidal tank coaxial with the spin is discussed with reference to Rumyantsev's criterion. Zones of dynamic instability, due to frequency perturbations, are found to be in good agreement with predicted values. Attention is given to free energy surface motions and internal motions, with energy dissipation accounted for by laminar boundary layer equations.
