Study of intermittency in the transition zone of a boundary layer
Abstract
The intermittency phenomenon was studied by conditional sampling of the hot wire signal; laminar and turbulent properties of the flow during transition were separately determined by this technique. The conditional sampling led to detailed information for mean velocities and turbulence energy of successive laminar and turbulent flows; particularities of turbulence profiles are explained. The properties of turbulent spots of different durations and the establishment of well defined characteristics of the longest spots are also dealt with.
