Inertial oscillations in a rigid axisymmetric container
Abstract
The inertial oscillations of a fluid of uniform density rotating at constant angular velocity in a rigid axisymmetric container are investigated. The natural modes of oscillation whose variation in an axial plane has a length scale small compared to the length scale of the container are considered. The behavior of known solutions for the eigenmodes in a sphere is considered first. Then an approximate procedure is devised for other axisymmetric containers. Approximate solutions to Poincare's equation for the pressure amplitude based on axial data are obtained.
