REVIEW: Waves and microinstabilities in plasmas-linear effects
Abstract
Wave propagation in plasmas where collisions may be neglected is discussed; the Vlasov equation provides the kinetic theory. Waves and oscillations in the absence of a magnetic field are considered, with attention given to Landau damping and ion acoustic waves. The anomalous skin effect and complications due to purely ballistic effects are also mentioned. In the presence of a magnetic field, cyclotron waves figure prominently. In addition, beam-plasma interactions, general concepts of stability, resonance cones, and linear coupling mechanisms describing the conversion of wave energy from one kind of wave to another are treated.
