Experimental apparatus for the study of the thermionic properties of metals and alloys
Abstract
The paper describes a system for the measurement of thermionic emission from metals and alloys as well as the adsorption and desorption atoms on metal surfaces in superhigh vacuum. A scanning electron beam is used to measure the work function of electrons at different regions of metal surfaces with an accuracy of plus or minus 0.02 eV. The distribution of the work function on the metal surface is recorded on a video device. Measurements were conducted at residual-gas pressures in the vacuum chamber of 5 x 10 to the -10th torr on specimens of tungsten and niobium.
