A modification of the variational method for solution of the problem of natural vibrations of a liquid in a vessel
Abstract
An approximate method is proposed for calculating the natural modes and frequencies of liquids in tanks. The approximate solution obtained satisfied precisely the equation and boundary condition at the free surface of the liquid. The boundary condition is satisfied with a certain degree of approximation at the tank wall. A method is proposed to modify, within permissible limits, the configuration of the tank in such a way that the approximate solution becomes exact for the modified configuration. Lowerbound estimates of the problem's eigenvalues are obtained for several particular cases.
