The plasma focus current in the compression phase
Abstract
The plasma focus current was measured by means of small magnetic probes which were decoupled from the ground potential. The experimental equipment and procedures are described. It was found that only a pressure dependent fraction of the total current flows at the focus region. The neutron yield is proportional to the fourth power of the current. The occurrence of m 0 instabilities in the focus plasma appears in the probe signal and is also correlated to the neutron yield. A comparison between MHD calculations and observed field structures is presented.
