Dynamic response model for cross-flow heat exchangers
Abstract
A model was developed to predict the dominant first order response of the outlet-air temperature to a change in water flow rate for single row serpentine, single row headered, multirow parallel, and multirow counter crossflow heat exchangers. In order to characterize these heat exchangers (coils), expressions for the gain, and the time constant, were determined. These simplified expressions are based upon coil geometry and standard heat transfer correlations so that the model is in a form useful to system designers in selecting controls and sensing elements in heat exchanger control applications. Experimental verification of the model for a single row serpentine coil, a multirow parallel, and a counter crossflow coil with turbulent water flow as well as a single row headered coil with laminar, transitional, and turbulent water flow was obtained. Two limiting cases were successfully analyzed.
