The effect of flexible appendages on shaft whirl stability
Abstract
A theory was developed, based on the method of Liapunov, sufficiently general to obtain stability criteria for shaft-appendage systems comprising any number of flexible continuous appendages. Two models consisting of a flexible continuous disk appendage and a flexible continuous beam appendage located at an arbitrary position on a flexible continuous shaft were examined in detail. Stability boundaries are presented as functions of the appendage flexibility parameter.
