Canonical formalism and the ECSK theory
Abstract
The EinsteinCartanSciamaKibble (ECSK) theory was shown to be a gauge theory for the Poincare group. Then the torsion constraints were eliminated from the Lagrangian to establish a one to one correspondence between a source for the ECSK theory and a related source for the Einstein theory which will produce the same dynamics. This demonstrates that the two theories differ only in their prescription for passing from a particular source in Minkowski space to a source for geometrodynamical spacetime. The general form for the geometrodynamical Hamiltonian with general tensor source fields was derived without using any four dimensional Lagrangian. Special cases of this result were the ECSK and Einstein theories with general tensor sources. The Hamiltonian formulation of the ECSK theory was such that its initial value constraints were preserved and the initial value problem for the ECSK theory with generic tensor sources was well posed.
