High-pressure multiwire proportional counter for X-ray astronomy
Abstract
The work considers the design and development of a multiwire proportional counter of simple geometry and construction for X-ray astronomy; ways to improve the efficiency and resolution of the counter by raising the pressure of the working gas (argon or some mixture of rare gases) are investigated. The search for a good high-pressure multiwire counter is conducted on the basis of a discussion of the general principles of X-ray astronomy and the general properties and design features of proportional counters. A demonstration counter has been developed (design diagrams are presented) and performance-tested.
