The masses and the mixings of various mesons are investigated by theuse of a hybrid of linear and quadratic mass formulae in the quartetscheme. The mass of the charmed vector meson D* is predicted tobe 2.02 GeV which is in good agreement with the recent experimentalresults. As for pseudoscalar mesons the masses of I = Y = C = 0states are expected to be affected by the existence of new urbaryonsheavier than the charmed one, when the rather large breaking of theOkubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule is taken into consideration. When a candidateof the charmed meson D with a mass of 1.87 GeV is taken as input,the mass of etac is predicted to be 2.6 GeV which is slightlysmaller than the experimental value 2.8GeV. This difference can beexplained by the small admixture of the heavier urbaryon pair. It issuggested that rather large mixing or OZI rule breaking forpseudoscalar mesons is closely related to the SU(8) singlet state ofL = 0.
