Abstract
This book is a thoroughly revised and enlarged edition of a book originally published in 1936, and contains studies performed by the author and other workers since the time of the original edition. The mathematical theory of a large number of different wave motions in a fluid is expounded. Topics investigated include twodimensional infinitely small waves on the surface of a ponderous fluid, Gerstner waves, underwater wing theory, waves in a channel with inclined bottom, waves incident on a vertical barrier, capillary waves, transformation of progressive waves into standing waves by hydrodynamic shock, oscillations of a fluid in a moving vessel, threedimensional theory of infinitely small waves, waves at the interface of two flows, wave resistance of a submerged body, unsteady fluid motions in a basin, decay of ship waves, waves of finite amplitude, Stokes' methods, Kortewegde Vries waves, Nekrasov's integral equation for steady waves of finite amplitude, and motion of fluid along an uneven bottom with wave formation.
