Transverse oscillations of pendulous sphere in a flow
Abstract
Self-excited transverse vibrations of a spherical pendulum in a flow are studied experimentally and theoretically at critical Reynolds numbers. Finite amplitudes of vibration are determined for both an elastic and a frictional support. The model derived for transverse vibrations of a spherical pendulum can be applied to problems involving cylindrical pendulums or elastic cylinders. Vibrations of the type studied sometimes occur in problems involving high smokestacks or heat exchangers.
