Accuracy of the two-dimensional, time-dependent method of characteristics
Abstract
The aim of this investigation is the determination of the error growth induced by time-dependent calculations based on the method of characteristics with simplicial nets for the approximation of stationary, compressible flows. The numerical results are compared with the exact solution of the well-known RINGLEB-flow. After one iteration the distributions of the absolute error of the velocity components and the speed of sound are plotted as contour maps in the whole flow field. An additional plot shows the different time levels of the new field points. The largest errors arise near the boundaries. For the method used the maximal error was smaller than 0.002.
