The System of VV Cephei Derived from an Analysis of the Hα Line
Abstract
The article discusses spectra of VV Cephei obtained in the region near H-alpha, in the years 1956 to 1976. A new orbit was discerned from radial-velocity measurements of selected M-type lines and the emission line observed at H-alpha. The phase variation of the central core of the H-alpha line, the mean separation of the components, mass ratio, and individual masses of the components are reported. Two principal absorption components are almost always present; an additional emission component is noted. While the origin of the emission component remains obscure, the velocities and intensities of the absorption components are attributed to a stream of gas flowing from the M-type star, through the Lagrangian point and around the B-type star.
