A technique for sidelobe suppression in active phased arrays
Abstract
The sidelobe suppression limit for the product pattern of a linear active phased array consisting of a small number of elements is calculated; the pattern is optimized in a Chebyshev sense, with minimization of the sidelobe levels of the product pattern in transmission and reception. Linear programming is used to obtain the true optimum solution, for which the Haar condition is not satisfied. A sidelobe suppression limit of -42.3 dB is obtained for an array of 20 elements, this limit can be reduced further by the use of exclusively receiving elements.
