Spectrophotometric investigation of the line spectra of the eclipsing binary U Sge.
Abstract
Variations in the line spectrum of the Algol-type eclipsing binary system U Sge with light-curve phase are investigated using 42 spectrograms covering the spectral region from 3500 to 5000 A and obtained with dispersions of 10, 30, and 75 A/mm. Equivalent widths are determined for a number of important absorption lines, the continuum level is derived, and the rotational velocity of the gas ring surrounding the primary component is estimated to be 300 to 350 km/s. It is found that the intensities of all the examined absorption lines vary with light-curve phase and that the spectrum of a subgiant secondary later than spectral type G0 IV to G3 IV is observed at totality during primary minimum. The nature of mass transfer in this semidetached eclipsing binary system is considered.
