Solid state SPDT switch for IFF applications
Abstract
Solid state single pole, double throw (SPDT) switches are extensively used for identification, friend or foe (IFF) switching applications. A typical use is in a side lobe suppression system where the IFF transmitter is switched between a directional and an omnidirectional antenna. This paper describes a similar application of a PIN diode SPDT switch for use in conjunction with an airborne IFF system in which it connects the transponder alternatively to an upper or lower aerial. The unique feature of this switch is an inherent fail-safe capability which ensures uninterrupted IFF transponder operation under conditions of driver power supply or diode failure. A brief description of suitable driver circuit is also given.
