Low-noise millimeter-wave receivers
Abstract
System design trends in millimeter wavelength electronics, using to advantage the striking improvements in solid-state hardware (avalanche diodes, Gunn diodes, varactors, mixer diodes) available in that spectral range, are reviewed. Enhanced system sensitivity through utilizing low-noise parametric amplifiers, broadband low-conversion-loss mixers, solid-state local oscillators, and cryo-cooled parametric amplifiers and parametric mixers is also discussed. Performance criteria and sensitivity requirements for some receiver systems, the concept of system operating noise temperature, and the state of the art in low-noise systems are reviewed.
