60 Hz ac losses in superconducting solenoids
Abstract
Loss measurements have been made on inductively wound superconducting solenoids using a flowmeter-type measuring system. The solenoids were wound from representative samples of commercially available Nb-Ti multifilament wire and were powered by a variable-voltage 60-Hz line source. Losses have been found to vary with the third to fourth power of the exciting current. Loss rates of 0.2 W/cu cm of conductor at 4 A peak excitation are typical for the samples measured.
