A two-dimensional HF phased array for ionospheric and other diagnostic applications
Abstract
A pencil-beam, HF, phased-array antenna has been developed for diagnostic applications. The radar consists of a broad-beam pulse transmitter, a receiving antenna array with high angular resolution, and electronics systems. The radar has been used for a variety of studies including: (1) assessing the angular spectrum of spread-F returns from an ionosphere modified by intense radio waves, and (2) tracking artificial ion clouds for mapping ionospheric electric fields and for evaluating the electrodynamics of the ionospheric plasma. The radar may also be used for the remote sensing of sea state and the mapping of ground surfaces.
