A simple, small-field reflection polariscope
Abstract
The design and fabrication specifications for a small-field reflection polariscope for use on photoelastic coatings is presented. The design, built around a standard microscope illuminator for a light source, and employing Tardy compensation, is described with regard to the light source, compensation, and the geometry of the prototype. Controlled testing of the instrument in a variety of applications is discussed in terms of its advantages and drawbacks. Detailed appendices provide a complete set of construction instructions for the body, analyzer, optical components, and final assembly, as well as the procedure for alignment. The steps in reading a small-field polariscope and full schematic drawings are included.
