Gamma Rays from Cosmic Rays in Thick Targets and Application in the Galactic 300 pc H2 Ring (Presented by D. M. Worrall)
Abstract
The neutral pion-decay gamma-ray emissivity from trapped cosmic rays is calculated in terms of the ratio of proton production rate in the region to that locally, f. The electron contributions depend on the characteristics of the region. A calculation is presented for the galactic center, from which direction SAS-2 observes a high gamma-ray enhancement. The results support a galactic origin for most cosmic rays in the energy range 1 to 10 GeV. The relationships between gas density, magnetic field and f are examined.
