Criterion for the onset of natural convection within a stratified horizontal porous layer

The method of determining the criterion for the onset of natural convection of thermal origin within a horizontal homogeneous porous layer saturated by a Boussinesq fluid is extended to the case of a stratified medium. Calculations are presented for two or three layers bounded by isothermal and impermeable surfaces.
