Simulation of the characteristics of the control system for an extensive-air-shower recording instrument
Abstract
A total EAS-simulation is used to study the efficiency of the peripheral control subsystem of the Tien-Shan cosmic-ray detector system. Recording efficiency was studied as a function of distance from shower axis in an artificial shower. It is found that, in a working range of shower axes between 0 and 10 m, the peripheral subsystem can extract showers with an electron density of not less than 4 x 10 to the 5th per cu cm and with an age parameter in the range 0.6-1.2 with an efficiency above 90%. It is found that lateral distributions of muons and electrons measured by this system at large distances from the shower axis (greater than 60 m) are not distorted by the extraction system used.
