Some results in optimization of roundoff-noise for fixed-point digital filters realized in cascade form
Abstract
The problem of minimizing the roundoff-noise in digital filters using fixed-point arithmetic and cascade realization under sinusoidal input is discussed. It is shown that, using Lee's 'minimax noise principle' and a new efficient pairing procedure, solutions can be obtained which differ only very slightly from those achieved by dynamic programming. No noise calculations are necessary. The results prove that it is possible to optimize filters of order higher than twenty within reasonable short computation time. Filters of such high order cannot be optimized by dynamic programming, because the computation time required becomes prohibitive.
