Lidar equations analysis allowing for target lifetime, laser pulse duration, and detector integration period
Almost all pulsed monostatic remote environmental lidars comprise the same functional elements and operate in a somewhat similar manner, where the term monostatic means that the laser and receiver optics are located in close proximity to each other. Analytical solutions are derived for both a rectangular shaped laser pulse and a more realistic laser pulse shape. The lidar equation is analyzed for both scattering and fluorescent targets. Attention is directed to an evaluation of the influence on the lidar equation of the finite lifetime of the excited state in terms of the pulse duration and detector integration period.
