Frictional torque of unsteady brake flow in a cylindrical container filled with a liquid
Abstract
The time dependence of the frictional torque developing on the surface of a liquid-filled cylindrical container which rotates with constant angular velocity and is then brought to a sudden stop is recorded by a special measuring device. The result is used to discuss the flow problem with particular reference to the unsteady Taylor-Goertler vortices. The dependence on a nondimensional time of the measured torque coefficient, is characterized by several breaks. In particular, the first break which could be observed coincides approximately with the break in the time development of the wavelength of the Taylor-Goertler vortices.
