Topics in Interstellar Matter
Abstract
The papers deal with such aspects of interstellar matter as the hot interstellar gas phase, interactions of stars and the interstellar medium, interstellar molecules and dust, the large-scale distribution of interstellar matter in the Galaxy, and interstellar matter in external galaxies. Specific topics include observations of O VI ultraviolet absorption features toward early-type stars, a review of observations of the soft X-ray background, the evolution of supernova remnants in a cloudy interstellar medium, a comparison between the properties of supernova shells and interstellar bubbles, radio observations of compact H II regions, a review of evidence for dust in H II regions, observations of unusual large-scale motions in H II regions, and difficulties encountered in the study of planetary nebulae. Other articles discuss silicon monoxide masers in circumstellar shells, observations of interstellar molecules in regions of star formation, relative isotopic abundance determinations in dense interstellar clouds, the formation and excitation of molecular hydrogen in interstellar clouds, reaction mechanisms for molecule formation in the interstellar medium, a comparison between galactic morphological characteristics derived from radio observations of carbon monoxide and atomic hydrogen, observations of H II regions in Local Group galaxies, and the gas content of early-type galaxies.
