Westerbork observations of three cluster radio galaxies.
Abstract
Aperture-synthesis measurements at 1415 MHz are presented for the tail-type radio galaxies 1200+519, 1339+266, and 1709+397, all of which occur in Abell clusters. The observed morphologies are interpreted within the framework of current models of cluster radio galaxies. In 1200+519 a unique curved structure implies that the trajectory of the associated galaxy has changed sharply on a scale of 100 kpc and/or that the galaxy is imbedded in a confining intergalactic wind which changes direction over this distance. The long narrow tail observed in 1339+266 implies that the pair of giant galaxies close to its head is not bound, contrary to the assertion of Chincarini et al. (1971). 1709+397 is a very long narrow-tailed source whose tail is double. Extensive velocity measurements of galaxies in all three associated clusters would assist in interpreting the morphologies.
