Conditional averaging of a turbulent vortex street
Abstract
The described investigation has the objective to develop a means of measuring the average vortex street structure in a turbulent wake. The bluff body wake of a two-dimensional D-shaped cylinder is studied. Attention is given to the experimental arrangement, the averaging procedure, and a simple model of the vortex street. It is found that a good representation of the average underlying organized structure of a turbulent vortex wake can be obtained by superimposing a parallel shear flow on a street of finite-area axisymmetric vortices.
