Recoverable Aerobee
Abstract
The paper describes the development of a low-cost, routinely reproducible method of recovery for the Aerobee sounding rocket. Particular aspects of development discussed are the fin removal system of the three-fin Aerobee, the recovery system design (the drogue, the main parachute, the actuator and power supply, and the cover plate), the impact protection system, focusing on the tail can and the thrust chamber/nozzle extension area and overhaul for re-fly. The performance of the recoverable Aerobee is examined, and flight test results are presented.
