Vernier beam steering by feed system displacement of a satellite reflector antenna
Abstract
Several possibilities of vernier beam steering by displacement of the feed system for the transmit antenna of a TV broadcasting satellite were investigated. The influence of antenna parameters such as aperture shape, illumination function, and focal length was examined by means of aperture field method. Starting with the center fed prime focus reflector antenna (calculation by means of current distribution method) the electrical properties of the offset fed prime focus reflector and the Cassegrain fed reflector were derived and demonstrated in experiment. Lateral feed displacement and tilting of the subreflector turns out to be optimal for the prime fed and Cassegrain fed reflector, respectively. The problems of a beam steering mechanism are discussed and possibilities for realization are shown.
